<\/strong><br \/>\nby Elliot Fried<\/p>\n<p>Daily I fall in love with waitresses<br \/>\nwith their white bouncing name tags<br \/>\nand white rubber shoes.<br \/>\nI love how they bend over tables<br \/>\npouring coffee.<br \/>\nTheir perky breasts hover above potatoes<br \/>\nlike jets coming in to LAX<br \/>\nhang above the suburbs\u2014<br \/>\nshards of broken stars.<br \/>\nI feel their fingers<br \/>\nroughened by cube steaks softened with grease<br \/>\nslide over me.<br \/>\nTheir hands and lean long bodies<br \/>\nkeep moving so&#8230;<br \/>\nfumbling and clattering so harmoniously<br \/>\nthat I am left overwhelmed, quivering.<br \/>\nDaily I fall in love with waitresses<br \/>\nwith their cream-cheese cool.<br \/>\nThey tell secrets in the kitchen<br \/>\nand I want them.<br \/>\nI know them.<br \/>\nThey press buttons creases burgers buns\u2014<br \/>\ntheir legs are menu smooth.<\/p>\n<p>They have boyfriends or husbands or children<br \/>\nor all.<br \/>\nThey are french dressing worldly\u2014<br \/>\nthey know how ice cubes clink.<br \/>\nTheir chipped teeth form chipped beef<br \/>\nand muffin syllabics.<br \/>\nDaily I fall in love with waitresses.<br \/>\nThey are Thousand Island dreams<br \/>\nbut they never stand still long enough<br \/>\nas they serve serve serve.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Daily I Fall In Love With Waitresses,&#8221; by Elliot Fried, from Marvel Mystery Oil. \u00a9 Red Wind Books, 1991.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Second Poem: Daily I Fall in Love with Mechanics<\/strong><br \/>\nby Susan Thurston<\/p>\n<p>in response to Daily I Fall in Love with Waitresses by Elliot Fried<\/p>\n<p>Daily I fall in love with mechanics<br \/>\nwith their smudged coveralls and names embroidered<br \/>\nover where their hearts just might be<br \/>\nand thick soled boots.<br \/>\nI love how they jack up my car<br \/>\nand press the pneumatic drill<br \/>\nto my tires and with hip<br \/>\npress lean into the whir of liberation<br \/>\nnuts and bolts falling<br \/>\nreleased from so much spinning<br \/>\nand holding everything tight in place.<br \/>\nI feel their hands<br \/>\nroughened by spark plugs and washer fluid<br \/>\nyet sweetened by overflowing oil pans<br \/>\nslide over me.<br \/>\nTheir arms and shoulders<br \/>\nremind me of deep river valleys<br \/>\nand other places where we could tumble<br \/>\nafter setting the parking brake&#8230;<br \/>\nfumbling and clutching so melodiously<br \/>\nI am left grateful for their engine knowledge.<br \/>\nDaily I fall in love with mechanics<br \/>\nwith their grease smudged bad boy grins<br \/>\nand come hither wide opening garage doors.<br \/>\nThey tell secrets in the pit<br \/>\nand I want them.<br \/>\nI know them.<br \/>\nThey slip belts back into place<br \/>\ntheir legs diesel dark<\/p>\n<p>They have lovers or spouses or children<br \/>\nor all.<br \/>\nThey are strut bearing reliable\u2014<br \/>\nthey know how timing belts twist.<br \/>\nTheir toothpick punctuated grins<br \/>\nreassure you they are giving you the best<br \/>\ndeal in town and they would not let you drive<br \/>\nwithout checking all your fluid levels.<br \/>\nDaily I fall in love with mechanics.<br \/>\nThey are better than Free Air<br \/>\nwant my vehicle to be safe and sound<br \/>\nbut they never travel far enough<br \/>\nbefore pulling the next car into the station.<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8220;Daily I Fall in Love with Mechanics&#8221;
