Golden<\/b><\/p>\n

for my parent’s fiftieth anniversary<\/i><\/p>\n

In the old photographs, it is always autumn.<\/p>\n

Colors fade to the sepia of remembered thought:<\/p>\n

my mother in a flapper dress, my father<\/p>\n

proud beside the Model A. They glow<\/p>\n

in the light of dreams that I can never know.<\/p>\n

What did they think of that autumn<\/p>\n

they climbed into the photograph of bride & groom?<\/p>\n

That love would conquer?—the Depression yield<\/p>\n

more than its tart and scanty fruit?<\/p>\n

In a season of scarceness, the bitter root<\/p>\n

of her father’s death fresh within the house,<\/p>\n

they strode from the church believing<\/p>\n

in sunlight—the prairie ringing for them,<\/p>\n

the October trees all aflame with praise.<\/p>\n

Good farmers, they knew how to raise<\/p>\n

the future, a steady hand on each day’s plow,<\/p>\n

patience in the fallow fields, a table<\/p>\n

big enough for all who’d need it, hope<\/p>\n

in the seedlings, beauty’s grace, a faith<\/p>\n

that is the opposite of winter’s death.<\/p>\n

This autumn, I would take the color<\/p>\n

of that triumph, the bright praise of trees.<\/p>\n

the harvest secure in the heart’s high bins;<\/p>\n

I would make of them a portrait fit to hold<\/p>\n

through time: these trees, these lives, this gold.<\/p>\n
