Purple Rain

by:
Prince’s premature death prompted me to see Purple Rain for the first time. The film feels a bit like Flashdance. Incidentally, Jennifer Beals, the star of Flashdance was asked to play lead female role but declined. The plot is apparently based on Prince’s life but the main story is Prince’s talent. No plot [Read More]

by:
Since every person now has a smartphone, documentaries of people living today will much easier to do because so much film material will be available on each person. Compared to the documentary on Bob Marley that I covered earlier, a lot of film material was available on Amy Winehouse. Relatively cheap digital video [Read More]

Marley

by:
Like so many other people around the world, I love Bob Marley’s music. A few years ago a documentary was made about his life made. Just finished watching it. If you like Marley’s music, you have to see it. I knew a few pieces of his biography but had no idea of the depth of his [Read More]

Carol

by:
The discrimination and legal persecution that gay men had to go through until laws were gradually changed starting in the 1960s has been covered in many films, most recently in the film about the British mathematician Touring. Eddie the Eagle

by:
I did not expect too much from Eddie the Eagle and was pleasantly surprised how it turned out. The film falls in the genre turn-the-life-of-a-sports-hero-into-a-movie. Three years ago, Rush dramatized with some success the relationship between two Formula 1 racers—Niki Lauda and James Hunt (see my Review]). Eddie the Eagle is a lot quieter and [Read More]

The Wonders (Le meraviglie)

by:
I waited for this film to come out in the USA for over a year. It was worth the wait because The Wonders takes you on a entirely different journey of the the Italian landscape. The film centers around a family of beekeepers made up of a domineering German father, an Italian mother and four girls [Read More]

Jobs

by:
If you know a lot about Apple and Walter Isaacson’s official biography of Steve Jobs, the question you would have is: How will Aaron Sorkin turn Isaacson’s biography into a film script? The film focuses on three product launches (the original Mac in 1984, The Next Cube in 1988, and iMac in 1997) [Read More]

The Big Short

by:
Michael Lewis is an amazing writer. I say this even though I have never read a book by him. I watched two films based on his books. The first one was Moneyball. I loved it ability to tell the story how major league baseball was transformed by a few statistic geniuses. Lewis, I recently found [Read More]
